This painfully beautiful radiation room at the Morris Clinic decorated with flowers made me remember my own 30-day radiation therapy which was also painfully beautiful.

I thought the whole thing would be so boring and clinical but in the middle of it, was it day 16?, I was Lady Lazarus rising from the dead. My First Radtech was so kind and tender. I looked forward to rising very early at dawn to go to the medical center to receive the beam, which little by little, everyday, was burning my skin that my Radtech was worried, he always reminded me to apply generous amount of lotion on the burned skin (AloeVera enriched with Vit E).

On day 25, my Radtech began the countdown. "We will soon graduate," he said, "soon you need not wake up very early anymore." In my mind, I was telling him, "But I don't want to graduate. I want to keep coming here everyday to be with you!" Because you see, I have become emotionally attached to my healer at the Linac (linear accelerator, the machine for radiotherapy). But of course, all good things must end, I cannot be irradiated forever.

Amazing and weird that I began to be thankful I had breast CA for if not for breast CA, I would not have experienced being treated and healed by my kind Radtech. Of course I knew it was God who healed me, with the use of medical science and the people He annointed to become part of my healing journey. On my last session I was heartbroken because my favorite Radtech was not on duty. That session before the last, he told me, "I will always be here for you, I will take care of you."

I was really depressed for a month after my radiotherapy. I missed my Radtech so much. I continue to heal, rise above my tears by God's grace. I came up with a short healing documentary (80 pages only), now on final production stage, where I told about the great love story... God's healing love for me, despite my unworthiness. The title of the book that God helped me to write is, "Precious in His Eyes." I really would love to share it with cancer patients and survivors and their caregivers, loved ones, doctors, nurses, and radtechs. Of course I will give my Radtech a copy.

Food for the Soul available at CRV Library

CRVL holds two precious books by Daniel Estes-- The Assurance of Eternal Life (1 John) and The Lord is Faithful (Jeremiah and Lamentations).

The latter is particularly relevant to me in connection with my restlessness, anxiety, fear during the early cycles of my chemotherapy.

Mr. Estes' discussion of Lamentations 3:25-27 proved dramatically liberating for me.

Verse 25 teaches me to wait. Waiting is the most tortuous, difficult thing to do.

Verse 26 teaches that it is beneficial to wait quietly for God's deliverance; that I must submit humbly to God; and

Verse 27 teaches that it is good to endure suffering while I can, while I still have the strength, so I become a living sacrifice, in order to prepare me for the greater challenges ahead.

God is able to help us no matter what the circumstances are. He knows our nature, He knows we are weak, that we are dusts. He provides strength through His Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. When we are weakest, then we are strongest for Christ is in us if we accept Him as Savior and Lord.

CRV Library will soon publish a healing documentary

By first quarter next year, 2010, the CRV Library will launch its maiden publication, a healing documentary by a breast cancer patient. The patient promised by God's grace to organize her notes a month after her mastectomy this September, and begin writing while undergoing radiotherapy.

She said the book is her way of giving back because she has received so much from people who love her and are praying for her healing.

WHAT IS GOOGLE Book Search? A library? A bookstore? Or something else altogether?

Some call it Alexandria 2.0, and the comparison with the great library of antiquity is apt. Google has digitized millions of books, and if its proposed class-action settlement with their authors and publishers passes muster, these books -- formerly the province of college libraries and research institutions -- will be available to everyone. Google began digitizing books without the permission of copyright holders, claiming fair use. This provoked a class-action lawsuit on the part of authors and publishers, resulting in a settlement that offers many boons for the public. Books already in the public domain will be freely available, and those still under copyright will be available in a standard 20 percent preview. Google will also provide free public access to the entire online repository of content at terminals in nearly 20,000 public and university libraries across the country, only charging fees to print.

But wait, there's more! Google gives book rights holders tremendous control. They can decide what price to charge for their works, control the amount available in the free preview, and add and remove works from the online collection. And the settlement establishes a nonprofit organization, the Book Rights Registry, to locate content owners and serve as a clearinghouse through which they can receive payment from Google and negotiate with new entrants to the digital market.

What about books still under copyright whose owners have not been located -- so-called "orphan" books? Google's claim makes sense: Many rights holders will emerge once they see that their work has value, but it is also in the registry's charter to seek out these rights holders. As Google Book Search generates revenue for content creators, the owners of all but the least-accessed, least-valuable books will probably come forward.

So it's curious that Google felt the need to include a clause in the settlement to prevent the registry, negotiating on behalf of "orphan" books, from offering a better deal to any of the company's competitors within its first 10 years. Google's argument is that it performed a public service by setting up the registry, investing millions of dollars in what will be a non-affiliated, nonprofit organization. This hefty initial investment would not be required of future entrants to the market, leaving Google at a disadvantage. Protection would ensure a level playing field. But if the set of protected books encompasses only those so valueless that no one will come forward to claim them, it is baffling why protection from competition in this area would be valuable. If, on the other hand, locating book rights holders requires time and effort, and the market for digitized versions of these books is easy enough to enter that a competitor could offer a better deal, this clause would create a real barrier to competition.

Google's innovative efforts will enhance the world's access to knowledge, but that doesn't mean it deserves to have it both ways. Its settlement is in many ways better for consumers than the possible outcome of litigation. But the fact that what Google is doing is wonderful should not preclude the potential to do better.

CRV Library has just adapted the lotus flower, symbol of knowledge, as its official icon.

The CRV Library (CRVL), launched recently, offers itself to the public as the easy access site for more than two million ebooks. Its blog at http://crvlibrary.blogspot.com provides links to various sources of free ebooks where readers can download millions of ebooks free of charge for personal, educational, and research purposes only but not for commercial profit.

CRVL subscribes to the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) 2003 Declaration of Principle, which is to facilitate access to public domain information in support of the information society without burdensome costs to the public.

For readers who are too busy to search and download, CRVL offers to email their requested ebooks as attached files up to maximum MB size allowed by Yahoo email service for free. CRVL has also compiled ebook collections on CDs and require that those who want them pay only for the minimum cost of CD and delivery (if they cannot pick up the CDs), CONTENTS ARE FREE.

CRVL also offers the Privilege Card that entitles the holder to free ebooks; free subscription to the CRVL Newsletter (featuring library events and book reviews); and books loan of up to maximum three titles at a time from its collection of business, economics, investments, and financing books. Soon, CRVL will receive its subscription from Fortune bundled with access privilege to the Fortune Online Archive.

Banned Books Week: September 26 − October 3, 2009

Banned Books Week (BBW): Celebrating the Freedom to Read is observed during the last week of September each year. Observed since 1982, this annual ALA event reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted. BBW celebrates the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one’s opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them. After all, intellectual freedom can exist only where the freedom to express oneself and the freedom to choose what opinions and viewpoints to consume are both met. As the Intellectual Freedom Manual (ALA, 7th edition) states:

Intellectual freedom can exist only where two essential conditions are met: first, that all individuals have the right to hold any belief on any subject and to convey their ideas in any form they deem appropriate; and second, that society makes an equal commitment to the right of unrestricted access to information and ideas regardless of the communication medium used, the content of the work, and the viewpoints of both the author and receiver of information. Freedom to express oneself through a chosen mode of communication, including the Internet, becomes virtually meaningless if access to that information is not protected. Intellectual freedom implies a circle, and that circle is broken if either freedom of expression or access to ideas is stifled.

Although they were the targets of attempted bannings, most of the books featured during BBW were not banned, thanks to the efforts of librarians to maintain them in their collections. Imagine how many more books might be challenged—and possibly banned or restricted—if librarians, teachers, and booksellers across the country did not use Banned Books Week each year to teach the importance of our First Amendment rights and the power of literature, and to draw attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society.

YOU don't know about me without you have read a book by the name of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; but that ain't no matter. That book was made by Mr. Mark Twain, and he told the truth, mainly. It was a fine, thick piece of wood, bulbous-headed, of the sort which is known as a 'Penang lawyer.' Just under the head was a broad silver band nearly an inch across. 'To James Mortimer, M.R.C.S., from his friends of the C.C.H.,' was engraved upon it, with the date '1884.' It was just such a stick as the old-fashioned family practitioner used to carry--dignified, solid, and reassuring.

Towards the end of November, during a thaw, at nine o'clock one morning, a train on the Warsaw and Petersburg railway was approaching the latter city at full speed. The morning was so damp and misty that it was only with great difficulty that the day succeeded in breaking; and it was impossible to distinguish anything more than a few yards away from the carriage windows.

The Island of Doctor Moreau
I DO not propose to add anything to what has already been written concerning the loss of the 'Lady Vain.' As everyone knows, she collided with a derelict when ten days out from Callao. The longboat, with seven of the crew, was picked up eighteen days after by H. M. gunboat 'Myrtle,' and the story of their terrible privations has become quite as well known as the far more horrible 'Medusa' case. But I have to add to the published story of the 'Lady Vain' another, possibly as horrible and far stranger. It has hitherto been supposed that the four men who were in the dingey perished, but this is incorrect. I have the best of evidence for this assertion: I was one of the four men.

It was seven o'clock of a very warm evening in the Seeonee hills when Father Wolf woke up from his day's rest, scratched himself, yawned, and spread out his paws one after the other to get rid of the sleepy feeling in their tips. Mother Wolf lay with her big gray nose dropped across her four tumbling, squealing cubs, and the moon shone into the mouth of the cave where they all lived. 'Augrh!' said Father Wolf. 'It is time to hunt again.' He was going to spring down hill when a little shadow with a bushy tail crossed the threshold and whined: 'Good luck go with you, O Chief of the Wolves. And good luck and strong white teeth go with noble children that they may never forget the hungry in this world.'

The Last of the Mohicans
It was a feature peculiar to the colonial wars of North America, that the toils and dangers of the wilderness were to be encountered before the adverse hosts could meet. A wide and apparently an impervious boundary of forests severed the possessions of the hostile provinces of France and England. The hardy colonist, and the trained European who fought at his side, frequently expended months in struggling against the rapids of the streams, or in effecting the rugged passes of the mountains, in quest of an opportunity to exhibit their courage in a more martial conflict.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
In the bosom of one of those spacious coves which indent the eastern shore of the Hudson, at that broad expansion of the river denominated by the ancient Dutch navigators the Tappan Zee, and where they always prudently shortened sail and implored the protection of St. Nicholas when they crossed, there lies a small market town or rural port, which by some is called Greensburgh, but which is more generally and properly known by the name of Tarry Town. This name was given, we are told, in former days, by the good housewives of the adjacent country, from the inveterate propensity of their husbands to linger about the village tavern on market days.

Mr. Hungerton, her father, really was the most tactless person upon earth, -- a fluffy, feathery, untidy cockatoo of a man, perfectly good-natured, but absolutely centered upon his own silly self. If anything could have driven me from Gladys, it would have been the thought of such a father-in-law. The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood
IN MERRY ENGLAND in the time of old, when good King Henry the Second ruled the land, there lived within the green glades of Sherwood Forest, near Nottingham Town, a famous outlaw whose name was Robin Hood. No archer ever lived that could speed a gray goose shaft with such skill and cunning as his, nor were there ever such yeomen as the sevenscore merry men that roamed with him through the greenwood shades. Right merrily they dwelled within the depths of Sherwood Forest, suffering neither care nor want, but passing the time in merry games of archery or bouts of cudgel play, living upon the King's venison, washed down with draughts of ale of October brewing.

The Metamorphosis
One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that in bed he had been changed into a monstrous verminous bug. He lay on his armour-hard back and saw, as he lifted his head up a little, his brown, arched abdomen divided up into rigid bow-like sections. From this height the blanket, just about ready to slide off completely, could hardly stay in place. His numerous legs, pitifully thin in comparison to the rest of his circumference, flickered helplessly before his eyes.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
MR. UTTERSON the lawyer was a man of a rugged countenance, that was never lighted by a smile; cold, scanty and embarrassed in discourse; backward in sentiment; lean, long, dusty, dreary, and yet somehow lovable. At friendly meetings, and when the wine was to his taste, something eminently human beaconed from his eye; something indeed which never found its way into his talk, but which spoke not only in these silent symbols of the after-dinner face, but more often and loudly in the acts of his life. He was austere with himself; drank gin when he was alone, to mortify a taste for vintages; and though he enjoyed the theatre, had not crossed the doors of one for twenty years. But he had an approved tolerance for others; sometimes wondering, almost with envy, at the high pressure of spirits involved in their misdeeds; and in any extremity inclined to help rather than to reprove.

The Thirty-Nine Steps
I returned from the City about three o'clock on that May afternoon pretty well disgusted with life. I had been three months in the Old Country, and was fed up with it. If anyone had told me a year ago that I would have been feeling like that I should have laughed at him; but there was the fact. The weather made me liverish, the talk of the ordinary Englishman made me sick, I couldn't get enough exercise, and the amusements of London seemed as flat as soda- water that has been standing in the sun.

The Time Machine
The Time Traveller (for so it will be convenient to speak of him) was expounding a recondite matter to us. His grey eyes shone and twinkled, and his usually pale face was flushed and animated. The fire burned brightly, and the soft radiance of the incandescent lights in the lilies of silver caught the bubbles that flashed and passed in our glasses. Our chairs, being his patents, embraced and caressed us rather than submitted to be sat upon, and there was that luxurious after-dinner atmosphere when thought roams gracefully free of the trammels of precision. And he put it to us in this way--marking the points with a lean forefinger--as we sat and lazily admired his earnestness over this new paradox (as we thought it:) and his fecundity.
